The Middle School at Crawford International School Kenya offers a vibrant transformative environment for students in Years 6 to 9.
This phase of the students’ academic journey is a time of tremendous growth, exploration, and preparation, serving as the bridge between the nurturing environment of primary school and the academic rigour of secondary school.
Academically, the students transition from a generalist approach in primary school to learning from subject specialists. The curriculum broadens and there is an increased focus towards critical thinking, problem-solving, and analytical skills to prepare students for the rigours of IGCSE or other advanced qualifications. For many students, this includes their first experience with Cambridge Checkpoint assessments in Years 6 and 9, which provide insight into academic progress and data to inform teaching and learning.
To help students build confidence, resilience and independence, a strong emphasis is placed on essential skills like time management, research, and collaboration. These skills aren’t just academic—they’re life skills that prepare our students for future success.
Despite a strong academic focus, the programme is designed to support students through the exciting yet challenging changes of early adolescence - a phase where independence becomes key. We encourage our students to take greater ownership of their learning, while still providing structure and guidance. It’s also a time for self-discovery as students begin forming identities and exploring passions.
Social-emotional growth and development is a key factor as students navigate peer relationships and build meaningful friendships. Our guidance and counselling programmes managed by the school psychologist help students navigate challenges like peer pressure, emotional regulation, and decision-making, ensuring they feel supported every step of the way.
Students also explore interests beyond the classroom. With an extensive sports and clubs programme, there’s something for everyone and Leadership lessons are a crucial aspect of the programme
Ultimately, our aim is to equip our students with the academic, social, and emotional tools they need to succeed in secondary school and beyond. We hope to prepare them to tackle the next phase of their education with confidence and a sense of purpose.
