Crawford International School is seeking to hire a Management Accountant who will:

a. Coordinate all matters relating to finance, accounting, treasury, taxes, budgeting and

forecasting.

b. Ensure deadlines are met, reporting done timeously and group Finance reporting

requirements are met.

c. Maintain compliance with company policies and procedures, processes and statutory

requirements.

Duties and Responsibilities:

Cashbook and Treasury

• Ensure daily Cashbook processing/allocation is accurate and complete for all accounts.

• Ensure Bank reconciliations are performed daily.

• Manage Petty Cash/Credit Cards

• Manage Bank administration and relationships with bank.

• Maintain weekly cashflow’s and cash planning/distribution.

• Manage Fixed Deposits and investment maturities and re-investments.

Accounts Payable

• Maintain accurate processing of expenses and supplier invoices.

• Ensure procurement policies are followed and implemented.

• Scrutinize validity of expenses against budgets and forecast

• Prepare supplier reconciliations and payment packs for weekly payments.

• Accurate Withholding Tax allocations

• Ensure TIMS/ETIMS compliance for all supplier invoices.

• Prepare monthly Creditors Age Analysis for status updates and feedback.

General Ledger and Accounting

• Maintain Sage general ledger structure and chart of accounts.

• Prepare all month-end journals and accrual entries with supporting schedules.

• Ensure that the fixed asset register is updated regularly and reconcile with the general

ledger and prepare depreciation schedule and journals.

• Work closely with all departments to ensure that accounting transactions are processed

timeously and accurately, in accordance with the month end reporting timetable.

• Maintain and reconcile group loans.

• Maintain and file all supporting documents for audit purposes.

• Assist with both internal and external audits and preparation of audit files.

Payroll Preparation

• Assist in payroll preparation by providing relevant employee information and resolving

any discrepancies.

• Prepare monthly payroll reconciliations and payroll journals.

Statutory Compliance

• Submit monthly withholding tax to KRA.

• Submit monthly VAT on imported services to KRA.

• Ensure monthly PAYE and VAT returns are filed.

• Obtain monthly Withholding tax on interest certificates from the bank.

• Assist with annual preparation of corporate tax liability.

• Ensure overall compliance of all taxes within statutory deadlines.

• Prepare monthly compliance reports.

Reporting and Management Accounts

• Compile and manage the company’s Annual budget and revised forecast or budgets.

• Prepare monthly expense analysis against budget and provide reasons.

• Prepare monthly management accounts, with actuals vs budget variance analysis and

performance commentary.

• Prepare Balance sheet reconciliations with linked supporting documentation.

• Prepare Journal reconciliations with linked supporting documentation.

• Prepare Half year and year end results and reports.

• Cost Saving analysis and other financial analysis.

Minimum requirements and Competencies

• Bachelor’s degree in accounting/finance

• CPA or ACCA

• Detailed knowledge and experience in implementing or working with large ERP software

packages.

• Advanced MS Excel knowledge and experience with MS Office

• Generally accepted accounting and bookkeeping principles and procedures and EFRS

• Time Management. Ensuring all targets and objectives are met on set deadlines.

• High attention to detail and meticulous.

• Clear and accurate communication and presentation skills

• Decision making skills and use of discernment.

• Critical thinker and problem solver. Using logic and reasoning to identify the strengths and

weaknesses within situations and provide alternative solutions, conclusions or approaches

to problems.

Crawfordians Shine Through Service: A Heartfelt Outreach to Ruiru Rehabilitation Center

On Saturday, October 5th, 2024, the Year 13 students at Crawford International School demonstrated the true spirit of giving, uniting the school community in an inspiring initiative led by Imani, Julia, Keza, and Ryan. Their call to action, “Make a Difference to a Child Through Your Donation,” resonated deeply with Crawfordians. The goal was simple but impactful: collect books, shoes, clothes, cereals, and cash donations to support the children at the Ruiru Rehabilitation Center.

What started as a Year 13 initiative quickly gained momentum, with the entire school community rallying behind the cause. Over the course of a week, the school hall became a collection point, brimming with donations, including over Ksh 100,000 in cash. The student committee, working with great dedication, organized the purchase of over 40 new pairs of shoes from Bata Shoe Company, textbooks and stationery from Text Book Center, and a variety of food items to bring joy and sustenance to the children at the center. The visit to Ruiru Rehabilitation Center was not just about delivering goods; it was about sharing time and building connections. Our students danced, played, and interacted with the children, breaking down any barriers of background or circumstance. One of the most moving moments came when each Crawford senior student personally helped a child put on their new shoes—many of whom had never owned a pair before. For some children, these shoes represented not just physical comfort, but also a step towards their future.

Mr. Alfred, the director of the center, shared the heart-wrenching stories of the children—rescued from the streets at a young age and given a second chance at life through education and rehabilitation. He expressed deep gratitude to the Crawford students for their generous donations and time spent with the children. "You didn’t just bring material items today; you brought hope and smiles," he remarked. One of the highlights of the day was the shared celebration over cake and snacks. It wasn’t just the donations that made an impact, but the genuine connections formed. Laughter filled the air, and for a moment, everyone—students, staff, and children alike—shared a simple truth: that in giving, we receive so much more in return.

Accompanying the students on this heartfelt journey were teachers Mr. Maurice, Mr. Tobias, Ms. Anne, Ms. Evah, and Mr. William. Each was deeply moved by the humility and kindness shown by the students. Mr. William remarked, “It was incredibly humbling to see our students embrace the spirit of giving so wholeheartedly. They have not only fulfilled their community service hours but have truly made a difference in the lives of these children.” As part of Crawford’s core values, community service remains at the heart of what it means to be a Crawfordian. Every senior student is required to complete over 70 hours of community service, but this experience was about much more than meeting a requirement. It was about fostering empathy, kindness, and responsibility towards those less fortunate.

As the day came to a close, the joy on the faces of both the children and our students served as a powerful reminder that giving is far more rewarding than receiving. This sentiment was echoed by a quote shared by one of the Year 13 students, "Giving opens the way for receiving, not just in material things but in love, joy, and connection." Another student summed up the experience beautifully, saying, “It’s not just about what we give, but how we give. Today, we gave with our hearts.” Indeed, as the Crawford community learned on this memorable day, true wealth comes not from what we have, but from what we give to others.

On behalf of the Year 13 students and staff, we would like to express our heartfelt gratitude to everyone who contributed to the success of our visit to Ruiru Children’s Home. Your generous donations of books, shoes, clothes, cereals, and cash made a profound impact on the lives of the children. A special mention goes to Tsebo for the partial donation of the cake, which truly brightened the day for the children—no event is complete without a cake! Thanks to your kindness, we were able to provide much-needed items and share moments of joy with these deserving children. Your support truly embodies the spirit of giving, and we are deeply grateful for your generosity. Together, we made a difference!

Am empowering e-gaming event that brings together students between the age 12 to 18 in groups of 2 to 4 to make a video game from the scratch based on a theme that will be unveiled two days before the competition.

About the event

A Game Jam is a competitive game design and development event where participants will make a video game from the start based on a theme through coding, design, and play. Participants work in teams of up to 2 - 4 members of ages 14-18. Participants are generally programmers, game designers and artists.

This is an opportunity for participants to demonstrate and develop their transferable skills such as creativity, collaboration, grit, and self-efficacy. The Game Jam encourages networking and insight into the game development field for the young aspiring developers and artists. It will also be an opportunity for participants to talk to invited speakers about various fields in game development and design.

Our theme will be communicated during the game jam. Participants will need to have experience using a game development software.

Registration and Attendance

The participants must be 12-18 years of age and will be expected to pay KES 2500 each as an entry fee for the four days. The participants must purchase tickets from the Crawford Game Jam Tickets by 26th October

Schedule of the event

Registered participants will be expected at Crawford International School- Tatu City by 8:30am each day.

The official sessions start at 9:00am and will be expected to end at 4:00pm every day for the three days. The main activities in the three days will be organized as follows:

Day 1: Keynote Address, Ignite Talks, 2 Workshops and Game Design Session

Day 2: Ignite Talks and Game Development Sessions

Day 3: Game Development, Presentation, Judging and Award Ceremony.

The awarding ceremony will take place on the last day and parents and teachers are welcome to attend this session. The winning categories are as below:

1. Winning Team

2. 1st Runners Up Team

3. 2nd Runners Up Team

Teams will be comprised of a minimum of 2 students and a maximum of 4 students.

Participants are encouraged to come with devices with the following specifications.

· Windows 10 64-bit, quad-core Intel or AMD, 2.5 GHz or faster, 8 GB RAM

· macOS Big Sur, quad-core Intel, 2.5 GHz or faster, 8 GB RAM

· Linux Ubuntu 18.04, quad-core Intel or AMD, 2.5 GHz or faster, 32 GB RAM

· Or any other laptop that can develop games on.

Our students from Crawford International School had an unforgettable soccer tour in London! They participated in the prestigious London Cup Tournament at Brunel University Sports Park, training with top soccer academy coaches. After intense preparation, they played a friendly match against a skilled London team and explored iconic stadiums like Emirates Stadium and Stamford Bridge.

The adventure continued with guided tours of London's attractions, a thrilling day at "Chessington World of Adventure," and an exclusive pro training session with a Chelsea Coach. Our U8 and U16 teams made us proud, securing silver medals in the Challenge Cup Finals. The tournament drew the attention of scouts from top clubs like Arsenal and Stoke City.

Crawford International School recently hosted its first inter-school Chess Tournament, bringing together 400 learners from 35 different schools in Nairobi.

Crawford International School recently hosted its first inter-school Chess Tournament, bringing together 400 learners from 35 different schools in Nairobi. The tournament highlighted the incredible potential of young minds and emphasized the significance of providing children with opportunities to engage in intellectually stimulating activities.

Among the talented players, Drish Shah, a renowned title holder, emerged as the first-place winner in the under 14 open category, with a 6 out of 6 win, emerging as the only player in U14, U16 and U18 to finish with a 6 out of 6 win. Manyeki Nathaniel of Plains view Academy came in second and Eddy Travis of St. Bakhita School came in third in the same category.

Drish holds an impressive track record having represented Kenya in Zimbabwe, Egypt and India, Drish Shah’s victory further showcased the exceptional skill and dedication required to excel in chess. When asked about the win, Drish Shah shared, “I have been playing since I was six years old. Chess is about passion, perseverance, and consistency. I am honoured to have received the top prize and eagerly await the next tournament.”

Crawford International School Chess Club in partnership with Mavens Chess & Scholastic Centre invites the chess players of different schools to the 1st Crawford International School Inter-Schools Chess Championship to be hosted in the school on Saturday 20th May 2023 from 08:30 to 16:00. The tournament will follow standard chess rules and regulations and will be supervised by experienced chess arbiters.

The tournament is open to all students below 18 years of age, who must register under a school or a recognized club.

SOCIAL BENEFITS

When children participate in sports especially on teams, they get to know other children, form bonds and make new friends. Additionally, during training sessions, they interact regularly with teammates and coaches. Gradually, the child will develop and improve their social skills that will help them know how to behave in a given social situation. The learn to win with humility and lose with grace.

BENEFITS TO THE MIND

Physical activity and exercise are known to improve mental health by reducing stress, anxiety and depression as well as increasing a person’s self-esteem. In addition to this, sports help children to concentrate better and boost their energy away from the monotony of daily life so that they can do better in school.

We all can agree that sports are not always rosy. Your child will inevitably face some challenges but on the flip side, sports will also teach them how to push through the challenges and come out even stronger. Life is full of adversities and learning how to maneuver through them is the most valuable skill a child can posses.

PHYSICAL BENEFITS

One of the primary role of sports to children is the rewarding physical benefits. Children who take part in sports have many health benefits. These include promoting healthy growth and development, building strong bones and muscles, boosting the immune system and reducing the risk of certain diseases and conditions such as cardiovascular disease, high blood pressure and obesity among others. Exercise is undoubtedly the foundation of healthy aging I am certain that, all parents will want this for their children.

LEADERSHIP SKILLS

Sports provide opportunities for children to assume leadership roles. Whether the child is the captain of the team or a player, they learn how to take an initiative and make big decisions in the heat of the moment. It’s through the movements made during the play of a match, that children learn to think quickly and interact respectfully with their peers, coaches and match officials. As such they become a source of imitation for other children and trustworthy people in the society.

VIRTUE OF RESPONSIBILITY

Participating in sports teaches children the value of responsibility. If they fail to practice or put in minimal effort, they will eventually see how it affects their individual results and eventually their team’s performance. If your child’s participation in sports depends on their academic performance, they will learn how neglecting their studies can affect them especially if they are banned from sports due to poor grades. This will teach your child to put equal effort into both studies and sports.

TIME MANAGEMENT SKILLS

Sports require children to learn time management skills and enhances self discipline. There are only twenty four hours in a day. If a child is responsible for getting a good night’s sleep and going to school all day, then the child has little time for assignments and other activities. Taking part in sports means spending less time procrastinating on tasks. If a child can balance their sports commitments with other responsibilities, they will be more organized, disciplined, productive and successful which is exactly what every parent wants for their child.

EMOTIONAL BENEFITS

Taking part in sports can help children learn how to manage their emotions and channel negative energy in healthy ways. Research shows that physical activity helps your brain stimulate the hormone dopamine, also known as the “feel good” hormone, a neurotransmitter that serves as your brain’s reward system. This means that playing a sport can help lower stress levels and reduce depression hence improving your child’s overall emotional state.

In conclusion, any child can be successful in one or more sports. However, it takes time for parents to identify sports that are right for their children. Therefore, they must be patient when choosing a sport for their child as it is a process that will dearly pay off.

I am here to shed light and demystify some misconceptions about one crucial subject in

the school curriculum: Art and Design! Art is but one example where human beings

demonstrate and exercise creativity. This comes with the smartness of the brain and

how well one gets inspired.

I am aware there are sweet moments that art doesn’t call for creativity. Visual Art in all

its manifestations is an important feature of human societies because it serves as a

cohesive symbolic communicative system that convey a lot of trends in a society. At

Crawford International School, we take art as a complete entity keeping in mind what

positive effects it can have on young learners.

Research shows that art activities develop brain capacity of a child in early childhood.

To get deeper into this, it supports cognitive, emotional, and multisensory organs.

Studies reveal that learners who engage in art activities exhibit more developed grey

matter of the brain compared to those who do not engage in art activities.

As learners engage themselves in practical aspects of Art, it offers them an opportunity

to use their psychomotor and sensory skills. Without tactile opportunities, a child can

miss out on spatial learning. Tactile learning is where a child learns through the sense

of touch. This helps a child to understand ideas through the sensory world in a better

way. Learning is stimulated in a different way than the usual visual or audio learning.

The message here is vivid, art is all for better learning. Even visually impaired children

learn better across the curriculum by a sense of touch whilst messages are sent

through sensory nerves to the brain.

What else can we say then? Let young lads and lasses be Picassos of our current world.

We certainly need to train our kids to be innovators and solution providers

One of the biggest lessons we can impart to our children is that life is not a walk in the park. Challenges will arise from time to time, and we must be prepared to invent solutions. The best mindset to adopt in the midst of a challenge is not that of a victim who gripes and complains, but that of a victor who remains focused on inventing solutions and exploring alternative courses of action.

According to Anthony Mwangi, A Leadership teacher at Crawford International School, we certainly need to train our kids to be innovators and solution providers to the myriad of challenges facing our world. In Chinese, the word crisis also bears the meaning of opportunity. A crisis or challenge is, therefore, an opportunity in disguise.

As parents, teachers and mentors, we must avoid the habit of complaining about all manner of things. This sets a bad precedent to the children who are constantly watching us. It does not require much intelligence to see and complain about a problem. In this world, we will have problems. It requires a great deal of intelligence to come up with solutions to those problems. The best sign of growth and maturity in an individual is to confront the challenges of life with the mindset that there is a way to navigate and grow through the challenge.

About the event

A Game Jam is a competitive game design and development event where participants make a video game from the start based on a theme through coding, design, and play. Participants work in teams of up to 2- 4 members of ages 14-18. Participants are generally programmers, game designers and artists.

This is an opportunity for participants to demonstrate and develop their transferable skills such as creativity, collaboration, grit, and self-efficacy. The Game Jam encourages networking and insight into the game development field for young aspiring developers and artists. It will also be an opportunity for participants to talk to invited speakers about various fields in game development and design.

Our game design and development theme and tools will be communicated during the game jam. Participants will need to have some experience with Unity Technologies and Unreal Engine tools of game development.

One such agent of change is Jenny Coetzee, the managing director of Crawford International School who has positioned the institution toward sustainability and ecosystem restoration.

Crawford Students emerged winners in most categories

On 24 and 25th September Crawford international students

participated in the Level 1 KSF Kiambu swimming gala at

Mpesa academy foundation Thika.

The students participated in more than 16 events which

included IM, freestyle, backstroke, breaststroke, butterfly

Our swimmers emerged victorious in most of the events as

they won individual trophies and gold medals

Among the top swimmers who received the gold medals

Music has always been my passion, and it has opened many doors for me including giving me an opportunity to play the flute with the Safaricom Youth Orchestra. Five months ago, I started tutoring young pupils to play the flute at AEF Reuben Primary school located in Mukuru slum. I have been volunteering alongside the Ghetto Classics team sponsored by the Art of Music Foundation.

While spending time on Saturdays at the school, I noticed that the school library stocked few story books which were mostly old. The librarian explained to me that the books were not appealing to the children, because they lacked local context and therefore were irrelevant to the kids. I observed that most students did not spend time in the library even though it was open over the weekend. Upon further investigation, I learnt that Reuben primary school has over 3000 students with each class having over 90 students. With the large number of students per class, the teachers struggle to cope and as a result many students suffer from poor reading skills.

This marked the start of my journey towards holding a book drive to buy locally relevant story books written in English and Kiswahili, which were simple and enjoyable to read. I am an avid reader, and this project is providing me with an opportunity to partner and collaborate with the school and other well-wishers to promote a reading culture amongst the students. One would ask: Why read? In my view, reading books can help these children living in the slums to become the best versions of themselves and even possibly motivate them to rise above their current disadvantaged circumstances.

Reading books can help the students to grow their creativity and imagination, improve grammar/writing skills and increase their knowledge. I aim to raise over 500 story books and so far, I have received help from different organisations including Jomo Kenyatta Foundation publishers, StoryMoja publishers, friends, family, and well-wishers. I also want to thank Crawford International School led by Ms Jenny, for supporting my project through the donation of phased - out IGCSE syllabus textbooks. These books will be extremely useful to high school students within the Mukuru slums who regularly visit the library to study over the holidays. The book drive will be held on Saturday 4th of December and all Crawfordians and especially senior students are welcome to join and engage in reading to the young students and motivating them to develop good reading habits.

On the 4th of September 2021, Crawford International School had its first IGCSE graduation on the school compound. The school was unable to hold physical graduation for the IGCSE class of 2020 because of Covid -19. However, this year was different as the school went all out to celebrate of IGCSE Class of 2021. Every year, the Africa Code Week organizes a challenge for African young people. This year the theme focused on using your superpowers to make a change in the world. Over 150 students participated in this challenge

Alma Ngaruiya of Crawford International School clocked 1:45.55 to win the Girls U9 100m Individual Medley (IM).

Crawford International School towered high in the regional swimming competition held at Regis School Runda, during the Kiambu Invitational Swimming Championships, organized by Kenya Swimming Federation, Kiambu Branch.

Crawford dominated in various swimming categories including backstroke and U9100M Individual Medley.

Among the swimmers who performed well in the Kenya Swimming Federation recognized event is Alma Ngaruiya of Crawford International School who clocked 1:45.55 to win the Girls U9 100m Individual Medley (IM).

And Faith Mugweru from Crawford International School who won the 50 meters’ backstroke swimming championship, for girls aged between 10 – 11 years.

Taking Future-Tech Education To Next Level

The fourth Industrial Revolution is resulting in schools having to relook the way they are educating not only their students, but their parents as well. Kenyan parents have rightfully shown caution over the introduction of digital devices in classrooms.

Many schools have noted the concern about the potential negative effects of computer use and have taken a carefully considered route in the introduction of bringing devices to school. This takes place only when parents and children have been educated in the safe usage of such devices.

In both the Cambridge-based curriculum (IGCSE) and the Competence-Based Curriculum (CBC) the cornerstone of attaining academic excellence lies in schools adapting a philosophyof developing students within a triangular relationship comprising the student, the parent and the teacher.

While schools adopt their preferred curriculum of education, a parallel programme should exist where students are introduced to digital literacy from as early as Kindergarten level. It is crucially important to start introducing 21stcentury skills, to prepare the learners of today for jobs of the future – most of which do not even exist yet.

To make it interesting let schools have exciting projects which involve organizing their own Tech Festivals for students to exhibit STEAM collaborative project work.

Technology however, is not only used for extension activities but also in assisting students with learning barriers with aids such as immersive readers.

Schools need a clear vision and plan on how they will be implementing and developing skills within robotics, coding and the maker revolution which should start as soon as entry level – known as Grade R, or PP.

Integrating STEAM education into existing curricula using 21st century technologies is key as this will heighten the value of the learning because it will focus on the application of the skills and not only the learning of the skills themselves.In the ADvTECH schools, integration of robotics starts from Grade R, and progresses throughout the years of schooling.

Nairobi, 7th December 2018… Crawford International School has announced plans to officially launch the school in Kenya on 25th January 2019. The announcement was made on the side-lines of the school’s thanksgiving ceremony, coming three months after the initial opening to its students in September 2018.

Speaking at the ceremony, Ms Jenny Coetzee, Managing Director, Crawford International School, Kenya expressed her delight at the strides the school was making in establishing a foothold in the Kenyan market. ‘We have seen an ever-increasing interest from the Kenyan people in seeking international, yet locally relevant education systems in Kenya that can impart their children the right way and foster their career growth and development. We are extremely proud to see the growing interest from parents and guardians in the school and I would like to thank everyone that has been part of this journey since September. I am happy to announce that we will be celebrate the official opening of the school in January 2019.We have started off with more than 120 pupils, a record number for any of our establishments around the world’, she said.

‘I would like to thank parents who have expressed interest in the school and have been part of us for the first term that is ending today. I would also like to thank our community of academics as well as the pupils who are the real reason we are here today. We have enjoyed immense support from everyone’, she added.

During the ceremony, Crawford international school also introduced the institution’s advisory board which is led by Dr Hezron McObewa, in a move geared at giving the institution a Kenya-led outlook. The advisory board members, who are currently serving on an interim basis, will formally begin serving in their roles from January 2019. The other members of the board are Ms Maureen Mujera and Mr. Wainaina Keujanjui.

THE TIP OF THE ICEBERG FOR SUCCESSFUL DIGITAL EDUCATION

Public schools in South Africa can look forward to joining the digital education revolution as some of their private school counterparts have been experiencing for the past few years, but education experts have cautioned against a rush to provide tablets and other digital infrastructure before a solid strategy and fundamentals have been put in place.

“In the rush to get on board with the 4th Industrial Revolution – a term many are invoking without truly understanding the issues involved – private schools have increasingly been offering coding, robotics and digital learning on their campuses,” says John Luis, Head of Academics at ADvTECH Schools, which has been at the forefront of introducing tech in South African classrooms for several years.

“However simply offering content that previously used to be in book or paper format, and not investing time and money in an holistic approach to content and delivery, as well as proper educator and support staff training, will render such initiatives futile and expensive mistakes,” he says.

Luis says while there is much talk about coding and ICT in schools, the key success factor when introducing technology in classrooms is the development of an appropriate and defined curriculum. And very importantly, tech in the classroom can never replace the fundamental core skills required for academic excellence.

In his State of the Nation address this month, President Cyril Ramaphosa announced that government would, over the next six years, provide every school child in South Africa with digital workbooks and textbooks on a tablet device.

While the sentiment is welcomed, there is much work to be done before the time arrives to unbox devices.

“It is extremely important to understand that learning is served and not defined by technological tools,” says Dr Neelam Parmar, renowned global tech-ed expert.

“All too often we think that the technology will fix our teaching and learning problems in school but what is truly important that the technology is embedded firmly and seamlessly within the curriculum and lesson delivery in the classroom,” she says.

The digital strategy at ADvTECH schools was designed and implemented in conjunction with Dr Parmar, whose stellar career includes leading the implementation of technology and learning across The London Preparatory Schools in South West London and now in Ashford School, one of the United Learning Trust Schools. “There is great potential in creating online learning systems to close the widening educational gap,” she says, “but to get to this point in education, it is vital that the government first understand the relevance of emerging technologies and the means of how to offer the necessary digital literacy skills for our next generation”.

She says the right curriculum is essential for successful and sustainable digital transformation in classrooms, and while the market is inundated with companies that claim to offer bespoke educational solutions, private – and now also the public education sector in South Africa – must realise that one solution does not fit all.
